HYPE Token Unlock on Sept 6, 2026: What $797M Really Means

Hyperliquid released another 9.92 million HYPE to core contributors, the biggest item in an early-September unlock wave estimated at $1.5 billion. The headline figure and the tokens that actually reach the market are two very different numbers.

Short answer: On September 6, 2026, Hyperliquid's monthly core-contributor tranche of about 9.92 million HYPE became claimable, valued at roughly $797 million in pre-unlock estimates and near $820 million at that day's price. It was the largest single event in an early-September unlock wave estimated at about $1.5 billion, which also included SUI and ENA. An unlock increases the supply that can be sold, but on-chain data from earlier HYPE tranches shows that only a small share was claimed or moved to exchanges in the following weeks.

What unlocked in the first week of September 2026?

Hyperliquid's core contributors receive their allocation in equal monthly portions. According to CryptoTicker, the pool of roughly 238 million HYPE is spread across 24 monthly tranches of 9.92 million tokens each, so the September 6 release was a scheduled step rather than a surprise. Measured against the maximum supply of one billion HYPE, the tranche equals about 0.99%. Unlock tracker Tokenomist, as cited by BeInCrypto, put it at 2.37% of the supply released so far.

The HYPE tranche came a week after a larger one: on August 29, about 14.18 million HYPE, worth around $1.2 billion at the time, unlocked across three recipient groups. Several other projects released tokens in the same first week of September.

Why the headline number overstated the impact

An unlock makes tokens available to their recipients. It does not mean they are sold, or even claimed. CryptoTicker reported that from the March 2026 HYPE tranche of 9.92 million tokens, only 173,217 were actually claimed, about 1.75% of the scheduled amount. Crypto.news described the same pattern from the exchange side: roughly 1.75% of those tokens reached exchange deposit addresses within the first month.

There is also a counterweight on the supply side. Hyperliquid's Assistance Fund, financed by trading fees, had permanently burned 48.42 million HYPE by September 6, according to crypto.news, equal to 4.84% of the original maximum supply. After the bigger August 29 unlock, the same outlet noted that HYPE briefly dipped to around $81 before trading back above $85. None of this guarantees how future tranches will behave, but it shows why a dollar figure alone is a poor guide.

Data sources did not even agree on the size of the event. BigGo Finance pointed out that CoinMarketCap's calendar listed a HYPE unlock of about 433,000 tokens worth $36.1 million, far below Tokenomist's figure. Forward-looking unlock data is an estimate, not an audited fact.

What is a token unlock, and why can it move prices?

Most projects do not release their whole supply at launch. Tokens reserved for the team, investors, foundations and ecosystem funds are locked under a vesting schedule. A cliff releases a large block at once after a waiting period; linear vesting drips tokens out in regular portions, as with Hyperliquid's monthly tranches.

Unlocks matter to the market for three practical reasons:

  • Potential sell pressure. Recipients who bought or earned tokens cheaply may take profit, which adds supply to order books.
  • Positioning ahead of the date. Traders who expect selling sometimes hedge or short in advance, so volatility can appear before the unlock rather than on the day.
  • Liquidity relative to size. What counts is the unlock compared with circulating supply and daily trading volume. In the table above, HYPE was by far the largest in dollars, while OPN and EIGEN released a much bigger share of their supply.

How to check an unlock calendar before you swap

  1. Look the token up on two trackers. Tokenomist, DefiLlama's unlocks page and CryptoRank all publish schedules. If they disagree, as they did for HYPE, treat the figure as uncertain.
  2. Convert dollars into percentages. Compare the unlock with circulating supply and with average daily volume. A small token releasing 10% of its float is a bigger event than a large one releasing 1%.
  3. Check who receives the tokens. Team and investor tranches behave differently from treasury or community reserves that may stay idle for months.
  4. Watch what happens after the date. Claims and transfers to exchange deposit addresses are visible on-chain and tell you more than the calendar entry.
  5. Protect the swap itself. If you convert a token in the days around a large unlock, a fixed rate removes the price drift between creating an order and its confirmation; see fixed vs floating rate swaps. Compare what you actually receive across services on the exchangers list, since spreads can widen when volatility rises.
  6. Do not treat an unlock as a signal. Past tranches are context, not a forecast. Prices can rise, fall or stay flat around the same event.

If you are comparing several services for one conversion, an aggregator vs a single exchanger explains where each approach saves money.

FAQ

How many HYPE tokens unlocked on September 6, 2026?

About 9.92 million HYPE from the core contributor allocation, estimated at roughly $797 million before the event and around $820 million at the price on the day. It is one of 24 equal monthly tranches.

Does a token unlock always push the price down?

No. An unlock only makes tokens available. Earlier HYPE tranches showed that only about 1.75% of the scheduled tokens were claimed or sent to exchanges within a month, and prices depend on many other factors.

Where can I check upcoming token unlocks?

Unlock trackers such as Tokenomist, DefiLlama and CryptoRank publish schedules by date, amount and recipient. Cross-check at least two, because their estimates can differ significantly.

Should I avoid swapping a token around its unlock date?

Not necessarily, but expect higher volatility. Compare the received amount across services, consider a fixed rate so the quote cannot drift during confirmation, and size the swap with that risk in mind.
